Riley won’t Run Against Van Drew

Clerk Riley

Cumberland County Clerk Celeste Riley said she will not challenge U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-2) in 2020.

A former assemblywoman from the 3rd District and former running mate of Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) and Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-3), Riley was said to be a first choice among party members looking to oppose Van Drew, and was said to be getting nudged by party members (and progressive activists) who want her to run.

But she won’t do it, she said.

“I’m not challenging Jeff in the Primary,” Riley told InsiderNJ.

Although she won’t run, sources say establishment Democrats – in dialogue with progressives – continued to examine what to do about Van Drew, who drew criticism from within his own party for refusing to vote in favor of an impeachment inquiry against President Donald J. Trump.

“I can confirm everything but the name,” an establishment source told InsiderNJ, when asked about discussions about the selection of a candidate.
